Welcome to the Eastern Realm





"Oh Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind,
Whose breath gives life to all the world,
Hear me: I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in Beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people.
Help me to remain calm and strong in the face of al that comes toward me.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others.
Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me.
I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy -- MYSELF.
Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes.
So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame."

We now begin the deeper teachings contained within the Medicine Wheel. As you see from the visual above, we start in the Eastern Realm, where the color is yellow and sun rises to bring us a new day.

This realm is the place of beginnings. It is where we first hear the call to adventures. This is where we begin our studies, our learning, and where we prepare for all our new adventures. Here is the beginning of Self Awareness and from here, we may branch out into Otherworldly journeys if we have prepared ourselves properly. This is the place where healing of the self begins. And it is here that we learn about our oown creativity and ideas, for it is here that we develop the skills which have to do with the mind: intellect, thought, theory. And we come to this yellow realm to discover clarity thru perception. We learn to expand our awareness through mental, intuitive, and psychic activity. The Eastern realm is the the place of AWAKENING and of experiencing the divine and where we learn to fly high with our brothers and sisters, the Winged Ones.

To enter the Eastern Realm listen to the story I am about to tell you and use your imagination! You enter the East by passing thru a golden doorway. All smells fresh and new and you are welcomed by the sound and site of an Eagle soaring high over your head.

Instantly you know that the Eagle is teaching you many lessons by its mere presence. You smile as you watch it realizing that it represents freedom and the ability to see all things with the clear vision of eagle eyes.

As you look around you realize that you have entered a place of vibrant Illumination and that the energy surrounding you is potently Masculine and Creative. Squinting your eyes a little you see that the Sun is just rising to greet you as a bird flies across the horizon already looking for breakfast as the day Dawns.

You know as you welcome the day that this place is a magickal gateway and that, if you pay attention, you will learn about Other Levels of Awareness and Understanding. Jamie Sams, a wonderful teacher of the Native American Traditions, says that there are three paths to illunination which are all overseen and protected by Eagle Medicine. These are:

Artistic creativity

healing and transmuting negative energy

Properly using and exchanging Energy

You take a deep breath of fresh, clean air and relax into the knowing that true energy exchange is Sharing and that, in truth, there are no limitations except the ones you have created in your life. The awareness frees you from the fear that had been holding you back from going into uncharted areas of life. Your mind begins to fill with new Ideas. Your sleeping creative self yawns wide awake and things suddenly begin to make sense.This knowledge, alone, begins the Healing of old wounds and habitual negative Thoughts. Indeed, it is as if you have been in a cocoon and are only now becoming your real and true self.

The Eastern Realm is truly a place where you become aware by clearing the blindness of the mundane world from your eyes and mind and heart as you summon the courage to take Flight with new determination, a clearer Overview. From here you can find new directions for you have learned to recognize an open door.

In short, the East is the place you would journey to in order to gain the following things:

  • Understanding life in a new and focused way
  • Replacing old beliefs with Knowing, instead of Believing
  • Expanding your point of view
  • Embracing male energy
  • Gaining spiritual understanding, enlightenment, & freedom

The challenges of the East, as described by Jamie Sams, are:

  • Facing inner doubts
  • Removing confusion or disbelief
  • Seeing the whole picture
  • Learning to stop limiting your ability to KNOW
  • Overcoming the fear of Expanded Awareness
