We now move to the Southern part of the Medicine Wheel. Here the Element is Fire and we enter during the heat of the day when the Sun is at its highest. This realm is the place of Passions, of Love, and of reclaiming one's power. It is the place of innocence, faith, and humility and it is where the Inner Child rules for the Souhern Realm contains the energy of children. This is the place where we begin to address our issues of self and learn to express ourselves creatively by taking action with the creative ideas that were tapped into in the Eastern Realm. We begin to ply our hand at the various skills which have attracted us because here the key word is Action.
We come to this Red and fiery realm so that we may learn to let go of inner pain and begin to laugh again. Watch out for the Trickster here for this is his home and he will, sometimes rather sharply, remind us not to be too serious because when we are serious we become rigid and are easily confused and tricked or, worse, pompous and fearful.
To enter the Southern Realm listen to the story I am about to tell you and use your imagination! You enter the South by passing thru a fiery, but don't be afraid because the flames will not burn you. You discover that you are in a cave and are instantly you are struck by the wonderful warmth that cooks all the aches and pains from your body and mind. You hear a noise and turn to see a small dragon gazing at you. His name is Puf and he turns and pulls back the drape that is hung over the cave's doorway.
As the panoramic view opens before your eyes you instantly know that Puf is teaching you many lessons by its single action. You smile as the little dragon grins back at you for you see in its little face a child-like playfulness and irreverence. You walk to the cave's doorway and squint out amazed as the tension in your body evaporates. You feel the masculine energy all around you and feel the desire to dance, or run, or climb down to the valley below. The energy of this real is busy and it is here that you come when you need to learn about your body's limitation and capabilities by giving it complete freedom of expression. This is where you come when you want to be who you are in Essence for here it is often enough to simply be filled with the wonder of being alive.
Jamie Sams says that the Southern realm is where you realize that you can trust every living thing to be exactly who and what they are at any given moment. Once you make this realization you are free to release all resentments and to destroy the illusion of who you are to others. Here you learn the freedom to become yourself.
The Southern Realm is a place where you can embrace humility and trust and let your Inner Child emerge and fill with wonder. Here you will learn to drop all facades and be your natural self. You can play here and heal all childhood hurts. In short, the South is the place you would journey to in order to learn of the following things:
- Gaining faith and childlike wonder
- Learning to protect and nurture children
- Learning to play and be physically active
- Healing Inner child wounds
The challenges of the South, as described by Jamie Sams, are:
- Facing arrogance
- Feeling too old to start again or to learn
- Refusing to believe in magick
- Believing in trust and love again
- Healing adult self-importance and fear
- Breaking the patterns of family dysfunction
